About
John and Lena Allen are missionaries in Papua New Guinea. John is a church planter, Bible translator, and Bible college educator. He has always been an integral part of Kunai Health Centre, acquiring the medical supplies and groceries for the nurses. He also does the logistics for the clinic: buying, packing boxes and hiring planes to deliver everything to Kunai.
After arriving at Kunai in 2008, Lena Allen began seeing patients on the house porch of missionaries Matt and Becky Allen and their two girls, Ariel and Hannah. Quickly word spread through the community that health care was available, and soon, days and times for open clinic hours were set, and patients began to come. Margret Manox, a very talented Kamea mother of four, began translating for Lena. She learned about medical things very quickly, and, knowing her people well, she became Lena’s right hand. After the community built a grass hut for the two of them to see patients, Margret began taking patients of her own. Soon after this, the patient load grew, and we were blessed by our first nursing intern, Rachel (Muldoon) Schellenberger. After learning bush medicine, Rachel rapidly moved into the same role as Margret and Lena. She was caring for her own patients and the work load lessened for all of them. The intern program continues to provide caring, Christian staff to this day. In late 2010, Kunai Heath Centre moved into a permanent structure next to the bush hut. More information regarding the construction of the Kunai Health Centre can be found here. There have been 19 nursing interns since 2010, and through their sacrificial labors, many people have been helped and hundreds of lives have been saved. Each year the patient load grows, and at this time there is a need for three RNs. Since Kunai has no doctor on staff, nurses do all the diagnosis and treatment, and it makes for busy days. John and Lena moved to Port Moresby in mid-2019, and they continue to support Kunai Health Centre from there. A satellite internet link gives the Kunai team the ability to keep in contact at all times. John and Lena still provide the logistics and funding for the clinic from their missionary support. Each nurse that comes to help at Kunai Health Centre comes through Port Moresby, and begins their training with John and Lena. |
